Israel's Currency - Shekel

Raveh Ravid Article The New Israeli Shekel ₪ is Israel's unit of currency.

The New Shekel's subunits are Agorot with one New Shekel equivalent to 100 Agorot. The currency was introduced on Jan. 1st 1986.

In Hebrew, the NIS is called "שקל חדש" (Sheqel Khadash), and is usually abbreviated ש"ח (pronounced shach).

The coin’s design is based upon ancient Jewish coins that were customary in ancient Israel.

The Shekel is mentioned several times in the bible, mostly as a means of payment in gold and silver.

The New Shekel coin displays a lily pattern on one side and the word "Yehud" in ancient Hebrew, the emblem of the ancient state of Israel on the other side. The coin's motif is based on a Judean coin from the Persian period (6th – 4th century B.C.E.)
